First, send a blank email from your normal email address to:

(any text you add will be ignored)
You will then receive a message saying "Please confirm your request to join gataowners"
This is a standard security check to protect you against your email address being "spoofed".
Hope you are still with me here as it gets a little bit fiddly.
This message will give you two options. I recommend that you choose
Option 2) REPLY to this email by clicking "Reply" and then "Send" in your email program
If you choose Option 1 and go to the webpage link you will have to set up a Yahoo identity for yourself (don't ask me why)
Every couple of days I will approve all genuine requests to join.
You will then receive a welcome email saying Welcome to gataowners. This mail gives you the address to use when sending messages, and instructions how to unsubscribe if you want to.
From this point, you can post or reply to messages to the group and you will receive all messages until you unsubscribe.
Technical Bits
There are two levels of membership.
If you have managed to set up a Yahoo id linked to your email, you will be able to view the posts on the web at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gataowners/, view uploaded photos and change your membership settings.
If I set you up directly, or you replied to the response to your SUBSCRIBE request you will only be able to send and receive the emails.
On request, I will change your personal settings to receive either individual emails or all mails from one day in a 'daily digest'.
If you find this newsgroup annoying or not interesting, you can UNSUBSCRIBE at any time.
Please give it a try. It really isn't as complicated as it sounds.
